Notes from Kath Haddow

NORTH TO(WARDS) THE CAPE
A long distance walk: maybe!

STAGE ONE: Fort William to Glenfinnan

As per the book, take the Camusnagaul Ferry over Loch Linnhe (contact 01855 841243. 08:20 Mo-Fr, 09:00, 11:30). Once across followed the A861 to the head of Loch Eil. This is a very quiet road but had to walk 5km on the main rd to Glenfinnan. There’s not much accomodation here

STAGE 2: Glenfinnan to Upper Glendessary

Defined path to Corryhully bothy but this disappeared high up the glen and there was a rough descent from the bealach. It was pretty straight forward map wise and we stayed at A’Chuil bothy (NM 944924)

STAGE 3: Upper Glen Dessary to Carnoch area

From Upper Glendessary take the right and follow the path for 9.65km to Sourlies. This is initially very muddy and the path ill defined. Follow the path round the headland to Carnoch, crossing the river via the bridge. and following the path until it peters out near waterfalls some 3.9km later at NM 890 995 where we camped for the night.

STAGE 4: Carnoch to Kinloch Hourn

headed up 800m due N to Mam Unndalainn and join a small path that leads down Gleann Udddalainn into Barrisdale. (8.3km)

From Barrisdale, followed the track into Kinloch Hourn, a route with lots of up and down but very scenic. You need permission to camp and the stalker charges for the privilage!

STAGE 5: Kinloch Hourn to Shiel Bridge

Followed the ROW towards Glenelg, turning off  into coire reidh to gain the bealach between Sgur na Sgine and sgurr a Bhac Chaolais, down to glen Shiel road via  a path. Stayed in the kintail lodge that night. They have  a bunkhouse here too. A well stocked shop at Shiel Bridge!

STAGE 6: Shiel Bridge to Killilan

The first part of this stage followed a nature route to the Falls of Glomach, and then followed the burn on a very scary path for a time before crossing a footbridge. The way then goes through Glen Elchaig on a track to Killilan where there is an excellent bunkhouse. When you pass the farm look for a left hand turn. This route will take you to the bunkhouse a lot quicker.

STAGE 7: KILLILAN TO STRATHCARRON

Walked through Glen Ling. Keep to the right at the waterfall and cross the river via a footbridge (2.65km). The path is unclear after the bridge but bear NW from the river and the path will appear after 100m or so. Keep ascending the well defined path and enter a forest (through an iron gate). Descend on the forest road, keeping left at the junction with the estate road. Follow to Attadale and then join the main road to Strathcarron. for 2.6km

We stayed in the hotel here which serves good food and is reasonably priced. Otherwise there is a long walk into the village.  There looked to be some nice camp spots further up the river.

STAGE 8: STRATHCARRON TO ACHNASHELLACH

Walk along the A890 until 150m past the bridge over the river Carron. Turn into the lane and follow this route to the river. At this point follow the defined path beside the river, passing through a gate then into a forest. Continue on the forest track, turn right onto the A890 and follow this to Craig.

There are no trains from here on in. Scottish Citylink  service Inverness to Ullapool operates through Garve, and Aulltguish on an infrequent basis.

SECTION 9: ACHNASHELLACH TO KINLOCHEWE

Retraced steps towards Strathcarron and took the signposted pony track up the hillside (and joined the main path from Achnashellach). Followed the track over the Coullin Pass and turned right after crossing the bridge at NH024 531. Followed the (boggy) track into Coullin and on past torran-coullin (in the woods). Follow this path out of the trees onto the hillside until it re-enters the forest. At this point  (NH035 583) do not enter the trees. The path is impassable lower down. Instead, skirt the trees and rejoin the path at Cromasaig.  The route then follows the main road into Kinlochewe

STAGE 10: KINLOCHEWE TO LOCH AN NID

This is not too difficult a day and although short is very rough. It begins by following the metalled road past Incheril. Take the track that goes to Heights of Kinlochewe and fork left. Follow the track to its end at lochan Fada (NH050 699), keeping parallel to the river. It is crucial to get to Loch Meallan an Fhudair (NH062 706). From here, aim for the bealach na Croise and then head down over a large area of peat hags that are very tiresome, keeping to the SE of the burn. Pick up the well defined path as it joins from the south east and follow north on the shores of Loch an Nid. We camped at the end of the path where it joins the main landrover track.

STAGE 11: LOCH AN NID TO ULLAPOOL

Ascend to the head of the pass then descend into Gleann Chaorachain.

This stage will be fairly easy. It involves a leisurely stroll along a metalled road, followed by a ferry crossing over Loch Broom to Ullapool. Service times are 10am, 1pm and 5pm daily exc Sun, weather dependant (contact 01854 612656)

From CWT Web:

(NB: The ferry has permanently ceased.)

Alternative route from Dundonnel to Inverlael via track to east at Dundonnel.
